Self Certification/PI Eligibility

Self Certification status is managed by the institution’s HR and/or contract and grant office.

Self Certification status is usually granted to employees that are PI eligible (but it can be granted to other employees at the discretion of each institution).  PI eligibility simply means that the employee is permitted to function as a principal investigator on a contract or grant.  Usually, all employees in faculty positions are considered PI eligible.  Additional employees serving in other research positions may also be PI eligible.

PI eligibility is initially determined and defaulted based on the employee’s title code. Overrides to an employee’s PI eligibility status are maintained in the Maestro system.

Self Certification status is maintained by the central administrators of the Time and Effort system and also by the institution’s payroll office.

Most employees get their Self Certification status based on their PI eligibility. In addition, Self Certification status can be overridden at the discretion of each institution.

The web page below from the administrators “Employee List” tab shows the Self Certify status for a list of employees.
