Getting Connected from Home

Requirements

Equipment

These directions are for a Windows computer with internet access. Contact the Help Desk to connect with a Mac

Getting Connected

  • First time user: Download the Remote Desktop Connection file and save it on your desktop or a favorite folder; you will double-click it each time you want to remote connect to your office computer
    • You only need to download the file once
  • Double-click the downloaded Remote Desktop Connection file and enter your computer name; this is ‘SAGO-‘ followed by numbers (e.g., SAGO-#########)
    • Laptop: look for the sticker on your laptop lid
    • Desktop: look for the sticker on top of the tower
    • Email the Help Desk if you can’t find your computer name
  • You may get a message saying Unknown Publisher; click Connect
  • Enter your TAMUS email address and your full computer password, not your PIN
  • Duo will kick off in the background, sending a prompt to your default authentication method; respond to the push in the Duo app or answer your default phone

Using Remote Desktop

Once connected you can interact and view your desktop just as you would sitting at your office desk. You can open email, documents and even access your Internet favorites

Disconnect when you are finished and don’t Shut Down or Log Off!

Helpful Tips

  • When you remote in, your office computer will lock; no one can watch what you are doing or be able to use your computer
  • To Disconnect, open the Start menu and select Disconnect or click the X on the drop-down ribbon at the top of the screen
    • You will remain logged in to  your office computer
    • Your computer will be locked until either you physically unlock it or reconnect remotely and choose Log Off
