What is a TIN and what types are there?

TIN is a State of Texas acronym: Texas Identification Number. More details can be found on the Texas Comptroller’s web site.

A TIN is made up of 11 digits:

  • 1st digit: Type of TIN
  • 2nd-9th digits: The actual payee identification number
  • 11th digit: A calculated check digit

There are 4 types of TINs:

  • 1 – an Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • 2 – an individual’s SSN (no longer issued)
  • 3 – a Comptroller-assigned TIN
  • 7 – a random number substituting for an individual’s SSN or ITIN
