The University of Texas at Austin reported last week about the campus-wide cost savings achieved from using standard hardware configurations. Beginning in January of 2011, improved desktop and laptop standard configurations were developed by campus IT professionals and adoption has dramatically grown. Departments across campus recognize the advantages of volume buying power and resulting cost savings. As an example, during the first half of this year, 83% of Dell desktop purchases (882) and 63% of Dell laptop purchases (236) were ordered using the standard configurations. Overall savings to date this year resulting from the adoption of these standard configurations is more than $219,000 over their already discounted UT Catalog pricing on Dell hardware.
