EMC notified several of the CIO’s that Bill Schmarzo, CTO of Global Services’ Big Data Practice will be in College Station on Thursday, August 13th. Here is the note:
Good afternoon Gentlemen,
I wanted to see if I could interest any of you in a meeting with Bill Schmarzo as I have him planning to be in college station on 8/13. I am happy to set something up off-site at the Hilton to allow for others that are interested to attend. Welcome your feedback as this is another topic that I believe that we can assist TAMU and the Colleges in further developing curriculum and courses around big data and developing data scientist both of which are in extremely high demand and continuing to grow daily.
Bill Schmarzo, CTO of EMC Global Services’ Big Data Practice, will be passing through the College Station area on Thursday the 13th of August. Bill used to be the VP of Analytics at Yahoo and is now providing his thought leadership through industry conferences, speaking engagements, recently published Big Data book and, most importantly, supporting EMC’s client base. He recently wrote a book on big data titled “Big Data: Understanding How Data Powers Big Business” and he teaches a course at the University of San Francisco School of Management on the “Big Data MBA”
In addition, I have provided a list of topics that he typically addresses…however, if you are interested in other topics, we are more than happy to discuss.
- Big Data Business Model Maturity Index
- Big Data MBA
- Analytic Evolution: Thinking Like A Data Scientist
- Data Science 101
The Data Lake: Modern Big Data Architectures
- Big Data User Experience: Creating the Actionable Dashboard
- How to Get Started…
Please let me know if your calendar would permit a 60-90 minute meeting. Please forward this note or invite others that may be interested in meeting with Bill. As we all know, Big Data is pervasive across many areas of the HiED business and the potential employers and partners that higher and assist in HIED too.

All Universities should be prepared to participate in the EDUCAUSE Core Data project. Our participation enables TAMUS Universities to maintain an IHE waiver from providing data required of other State agencies.
System-Wide Contracting News
Texas A&M IT has begun a project to implement Infoblox for DNS, DHCP and IP address management for the TAMU network. The vendor has agreed to extend the discounts TAMU receives as a result of its large volume purchase to all System members. Details of this pricing will be shared when the agreement is finalized.
Additionally, Infoblox is an extensible enterprise solution that offers options that could facilitate a System wide collaborative implementation using a grid deployment strategy (Infoblox). An online presentation via Webex will be scheduled to allow the vendor to give an overview of the solution. Contact Scott Honea at TAMU IT if you are interested in the Infoblox project.
EMC provided the following announcement regarding its pending sale of EMC Syncplicity to Skyview Capital (in case you missed it).
Good morning Mark,
I want to let you know that Skyview Capital announced Tuesday the 7th of June that they have reached agreement with EMC to acquire our Syncplicity business.
As a Syncplicity customer I want to assure you that there will be no change in your Syncplicity service, and Syncplicity will remain an EMC Select Partner, which means that I will still work with you and the rest of the TAMU System members and the Syncplicity team to make sure you are successful.
I hope you’ll agree that this is a good thing for you.
We all know that the Enterprise File Sync and Share (EFSS) market is evolving fast and customers like Texas A&M University System are continually looking for new end user features and functionality to enable their increasingly mobile workforces and work flows. That said, this is a step away from EMC’s core infrastructure strength. For that reason, EMC has decided to spin off the Syncplicity business.
This will allow EMC to increase its focus on EMC II investments, while ensuring that Syncplicity is managed and funded for success in the EFSS market. Skyview is a strong organization with a vision to take Syncplicity into the future.
Here are some important points you should know:
- Despite the change of ownership, EMC will remain a financial stakeholder
- As I mentioned before, Syncplicity will still be sold by EMC through our Select Partnership, just as it is today
- All the terms of our previous deal remain… there is no change in service or to our commitment to you
- Most of the people you are used to working with in the Syncplicity customer success team will still be there to help you
